Film & Movies Track
Sally Helppie, a graduate of the UCLA School of Law, is a practicing entertainment lawyer and feature film producer.  She represents parties in high-budget Hollywood productions (e.g., Hugo, The Tourist) and in smaller projects and television (e.g., Anger Management, Children’s Medical Center).  She has produced four feature films in Texas (e.g., Beyond the Farthest Star) since 2007 and teaches the semester-long Producers’ Seminar course at SMU.

Sally will be teaching a Saturday morning class from 10:30-noon on "Introduction to Entertainment Law: What to know before you shoot". Creating a feature film, a documentary, a short or a webisode is exciting.  But what happens if you can never show it outside your own living room because you failed to nail down the necessary rights?
Learn about the steps you need to take before you pick up the camera.  Lock down your rights in the script, the performances and the music.  This is necessary for financing on the front end and distribution on the back end.

This class will include an overview of copyright and trademark law, script clearance and chain of title, with time for asking your own questions.
